Winter Window Dressing Theme Ideas

It might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but at VM Design we love winter. Warm jumpers, hot chocolate, and plenty of parties – it really is the most wonderful time of the year! Add to that a wealth of new retail window dressing opportunities for the season and it couldn’t get much better. That is, as long as you have plenty ideas for your shop.

If you are struggling with winter retail window dressing, we have put together some inspiration for themes that you might be able to use. Check them out and see what you think!

Starry Night

There’s something about the glow of a starry sky on a winters night that’s truly magical, and bringing that to your window display is certain to catch people’s eyes. Recreate the night sky with silver constellations printed onto a dark wall, or painted directly onto the glass of your shop window. You can also create a light-up night sky using plaster board and small LEDs, perfect for when the evenings get darker and you need something to light up the street.

Icy Winter Wonderland

Add a little chill to your display with an enchanting winter wonderland and captivate potential customers walking past. When it comes to this kind of display, the more the better, so fill your shop window with fake snow, hang clear icicles from the ceiling, and add plenty of fairy lights. We also love the look of bare trees creating a winter woodland feel amongst all the snow and ice, and using blue-toned lighting to add to the chill.

Fairy-tale Fantasy

Transport high street shoppers to another world with a magical, fairy-tale display. Whether you recreate a famous scene from a much-loved story, such as The Nutcracker, or you create your own, it’s always a winter hit. If you’re creating your own, you could continue the story elsewhere, encouraging customers to head over to your social media or come in store to find out more.

Party Season

Winter is the season of parties, so why not get in the spirit with your retail window dressing? You could re-create a party scene using well-dressed mannequins, and use your own products to bring the party to life, or give off an unmistakable party vibe with plenty of glitter, gold, and disco balls. Remember, you want your display to catch people’s eyes, so the bolder the better!

Be inventive this winter and make sure your display stands out from the crowd. If you think you might struggle to draw customers in with your retail window display, or you need some expert knowledge to give your ideas a boost, get in touch with our professionals at VM Design. 6 Must-Have Props for Easy Autumn Window Displays

Autumn is almost here, and shops around the UK are already planning the switch up in their window displays. It’s time to put the beach balls and BBQ’s back into storage and opt for something a little cosier!

If you haven’t even thought about your autumn retail window dressing, don’t panic – our team at VM Design have got you covered. We’ve put together 6 of our essential props that you can add to any display for an easy Autumnal look.

Colourful Leaves

Not much says Autumn like the changing colours of the leaves, and adding a bunch to your display will instantly make it more seasonal. Shades of light brown, deep orange, and warm gold are a must. We’d advise ditching real leaves though as they’ll start to decompose pretty quickly, which never looks great in a window! Instead, opt for paper alternatives.

Wood and Bark

Bring the outdoors inside with a touch of wood or bark, reflecting on Autumnal walks through the forest. You can use logs as replacement tables to show off your products or create arches of twigs under which your shop’s items take centre stage. Get inventive – there’s a whole lot you can do with them!

Plenty of Pumpkins

Get into the spirit of Autumn and Halloween with pumpkins. No matter what your display is, adding a few, well-placed pumpkins is a simple way to get that autumnal feeling. You can leave them as they are, carve them for a spooky Halloween vibe, or even paint them in different colours to match your brands aesthetic.

Little Acorns

Sticking with the woodland theme, acorns are a lovely addition to a shop window display. Scatter them around your products, or hang them from see-through string from the ceiling, creating a cascade of little acorns.

Autumnal Animals

Whether you use cute stuffed owls, realistic models, or silhouettes painted onto the glass of your window, animals are great for an instant autumnal feel. Hedgehogs, foxes, and owls are all very seasonal, and black cats are wonderful for Halloween themed displays.

Colour and Texture

If you’ve left your retail window dressing until the very last minute and need to add something Autumnal quickly, think about the colours and textures you’re using. Showcase products that are in deep red, orange, and brown hues, and use thicker materials and chunky textures.

How to Win the Window Display Battle

Retail window dressing is a huge part of every shops branding. As you have probably heard many times, your front window is essentially like the cover of a book – which means that, despite the old saying, everyone’s going to judge you on it. So, it’s important you’re standing out from the crowd, grabbing the attention of consumers, and creating a window display to boost your business.

To help you out, our team at VM Design have put together some top retail window dressing tips and tricks you can follow. Check them out!

Plan Your Aims

Knowing what you want from your window is the key to making it successful. Make a clear list of all of your aims and keep it on hand whenever you’re planning a new display. Here are some things you could consider:

  • Who are you trying to attract? Who’s your target audience?
  • How do you want people to perceive your brand?
  • Are there key products you want to push?

Point of View

When designing your display, it’s key you think of it from your customers point of view rather than your own. Think about how someone who is completely unfamiliar with your brand will feel about your display. Does it tell them who you are? Does it make them want to find out more? If you can, get a point of view from a customer, or from someone you know who doesn’t work at your shop.

Add a Little Movement

Making your retail display move is a great way to grab the attention of the potential customers who are walking by. In fact, Popai – a company dedicated to shopper experience – discovered that moving window displays can increase sales by over 300%. That’s a huge figure! From moving signs, to scrolling banners, or even animated figures, anything that adds some life to a stagnant display is going to pull people in.

Get Interactive

In this digital age, interactive displays are the next big thing. From linking your window to social media, and encouraging people to interact with competitions, or having touch-screens with more information or fun things to do on them, there are a ton of ways you can get your audience involved. It’ll certainly make your display more memorable.

It’s All About Those Angles

To instantly make a window more interesting, consider how you’ve laid it out. Using images in the background and forefront, as well as switching products to point left or right, and staggering them rather than having them all in one straight line is a great idea. It’ll give consumers more to look at, and help with giving a good view of your display from different angles, too.

Tips for Eye-Catching Window Displays

A shop window dressing is just as important as the cover of a book. Sure, your products and services might be amazing, but without a front that entices and engages, customers just aren’t going to be that interested. It may seem shallow, but appearance really does matter. This is why it’s vital that your retail window dressing is up to scratch and catches the attention of passers-by, so we have put together a little guide to help you out.

Stay Original

This may seem like an obvious point, but it’s so crucial to a good display that it needs to be included. To get noticed, you need to go against the norm and create a display that surprises customers with originality and inventiveness. Use unexpected materials for everyday items or create large-scale versions of small products to create a surreal display. Be whacky and create something people will want to stop and look at, and even take pictures of, before being lured into your shop. At all costs, avoid cliché seasonal themes – there are enough of those already!

Be Bold and Bright

Displays that are bright and colourful are instantly more noticeable than bleak, grey windows. Don’t be afraid to use colour – and lots of it! Pick a colour theme of a few bright colours to base your window around, or go completely out there with a rainbow palette. People are attracted to colour so make the most of it. Just be sure that, if you are using a lot of colours, they all work well together and won’t give passers-by an instant headache; be tasteful with your tones.

Think About the View

It’s important when shop window dressing that you consider the view from the street. Windows aren’t usually at ground level, so from the inside where you’re working, the angles and height will be a lot different from where the passers-by are looking in. Head outside and mark out where eye-level is on your window from the street (you could use wash-off markers or tape) and base your display around that point. This will make your window a lot more visually pleasing to viewers, and you can set the focal point directly in their eye-line.

Don’t Clutter

Having a cluttered display is a big no. If you have too much going on, your display will just look busy and confused, and passers-by will struggle to spot what you’re actually advertising. Stick to advertising a few key products rather than trying to get your whole shop in the window display, and make sure that whatever you’re trying to get across to the customer is clear.

Keep it Fresh

Don’t ever stick with the same retail window display for months on end; it’ll end up just fading into the background as passers-by will have seen it so often. If you want to keep people looking to your shop, you need to keep things fresh. This means that you should be changing it up at least every 2 to 4 weeks. A new display means more attention, and that often leads to more customers.

Your shop window display is absolutely crucial to attracting new customers and enticing passers-by into your store, which is why you can’t get it wrong. If you think you need some help, or just want to stay on the safe side and ensure you’re getting those customers, get in touch with VM Design. Increasing budgets for Window Dressing

Nobody in the retail trade doubts that the visual merchandising tool can make a great impression. However, how much money to spend on the visual merchandising is a frequently asked question.

There are a lot of lessons to learn from the bigger players in the game as these companies have much bigger data to call upon and they have been experimenting with it for decades. One of these key leanings has to be about the visual merchandising and window dressing budgets.

From small boutique shops to nationwide chain stores, the budgets for visual merchandising and window dressing are “one of the best-kept secrets”. However, recent studies amongst the big retailers indicate a clear trend of increasing visual merchandising and window dressing budgets despite the recent financial pressures on the retail trade.

The window dressing budget accounts for approximately 2% of the overall marketing costs for the business that took part in the surveys. At the top end, the department stores, expectedly, spend significantly more than 2% of their marketing budget on window dressing.

Interestingly, though, the chain stores apportion slightly less than 2% of their marketing budget in the window dressing. The data suggest that this is because they spend more on their in-store presentations.

On the other end of the scale, the smaller retailers do not seem to have a fixed budget for window dressing.

Using just a fraction of the total marketing budget, the smaller retailers can have a powerful effect at a relatively low cost.

Spring is here!

With the arrival of Spring and the clocks going forward we can feel rejuvenated and with the added bonus of warmer weather the buying public (your customers) are ready to shop!

When installing a Spring window please make sure that you thoroughly clean any plinths, Perspex stands and of course the merchandise – this may need to be checked for dust and general ‘debris’ whether it is hard or soft merchandise.  The biggest faux pas when installing a new window is dirty window glass! This must be kept scrupulously clean all year round. It gives the wrong impression to your customers if your glass is grubby, smeared or dirty!  Also during this time of the year you may get dead insects in the window space: make sure you check your window daily and remove any insects when you do your daily clean.

Make your windows bright and eye catching, don’t clutter them with an excess of merchandise and remember that a few key pieces and a smart prop in a window will attract prospective customers rather than filling it full of every new line you have just had delivered which will confuse your customer as their eye won’t know where to look!

Remember that it is very important to change the merchandise in your window on a regular basis. When you install a new window, it’s most important to dress it with a great prop and then change the merchandise two weeks later to keep your window fresh and current.

Windows are a great selling tool and the first thing that your customer sees. With little outlay they can work for you in a positive way and increase your footfall and revenue.

VM Design can help you with your windows either on a regular basis or as a one off! Please take the time to view our visual merchandising gallery and do not hesitate to contact us should you require us to install a window or display for you.
