Liskeard Visual Merchandising October 2013

It’s now just over a year since we completed our week advising 20 shops and cafes on improving their displays and general presentation in the town of Liskeard in Cornwall. This was part of the Government directive set up to help towns rejuvenate their high streets and improve awareness of their town.

We won the contract over two other companies as the Liskeard Town Team thought that VM Design understood the needs of the retailers in question.

The VM Design team tackled a range of shops specialising in a wide spectrum of merchandise: hardware, newsagent, books, ball gowns, prom dresses, cycles, men’s and ladies wear, shoes, jewellery, gifts, Christmas decorations, cards and stationery, toys and craft items. We also advised two cafes!

Many of the shops had more than one window and so we redressed one of their windows using the same merchandise but showing the retailer how to group tightly, achieve height, group to colour, un clutter and clean the window space. We then asked the retailer to replicate what we had created in their other window.

Two evening workshops were held with twenty of the retailers attending each workshop. During the 2 hour workshop we covered all aspects of display and then asked the retailers to pair up with someone else and we then conducted a hands on participation session in which the individual teams created a display using props, merchandise and something to display the merchandise on from a range that VM Design had supplied. The workshops were well received and everyone took some tips away with them which were implemented in their windows when they took on the task the next day.

We also produced a 20 page manual that could be referred to after we had left and we set up a ‘helpline’ should any of the retailers needed help.

Most of the retailers managed to improve their visual merchandising skills and generally their windows took on a more professional look making it easier for their customers to  view the merchandise in the windows.

Our presence in the town generated some excitement and we were interviewed on BBC Radio Cornwall live a couple of times and were filmed for the BBC’s ‘Inside Out’ programme.

A photographer followed us one day for a photographic diary. All in all it was a very productive week and the individual retailers took the skills they required from our coaching to improve their presentation.

We have been back to the town a couple of times and the skills learned are still being used in the creation of some good local displays.
