Visual merchandising essentials

When you are planning your store’s visual merchandising and display design, there are some Visual Merchandising Essentials you ought to consider. Here are some tips to help you plan out the best use of your merchandise:

  • Timing the use of the merchandise well: It is extremely important to use the right product at the right time. This will showcase the products in your display that are pertinent to your shoppers. For example, consider bringing seasonal products into your shop six weeks ahead of the season start.
  • Not overcrowding the shop with lots of products: Not having too much stuff in the store is always a key consideration for the visual merchandising professionals. Quite a lot of shops have too many things in them. And, most of the time, the shops tend to have the wrong and dated stuff.
  • Finding the right merchandise that performs well: If a product is not performing well, why are you still hanging on to it? One common trap that the shop owners fall into is getting emotionally too attached to a particular product.
  • Finding the right mixture of merchandise: Knowing your customers is incredibly important. It sounds very obvious but a surprising number of shop owners are not able to clearly describe who their typical customers are. Understand your customers; get to know what is important in their lives. Ask them if you are not sure. Try and collect their email address where possible and carry out seasonal surveys where possible. Remember, nothing remains the same even if you have a good understanding of your customer base.
  • Using your products to help our sales and to assist your staff: Regularly train your staff on what the key points of your products are and how to best use them. Also remember that the product you sell should shape the focus and value of any display you do.
  • Best use of the shop window: Your shop window is very important for your brand. So try creating a specific image. It will even be more powerful if your display inspiration comes from your products, their colours, sizes, shapes and symbols.

All this can be overwhelming at times. If you require professional advice from a visual merchandising consultant, please get in touch with VM Design. We can also arrange tailor-made visual merchandising training sessions for the artistic-minded people as well.

Window Dressing Ideas for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day has always been a lucrative time for shop owners. With millions of mothers around the country everyone wants to buy gifts for his/her mother. It is therefore an opportunity for retailers to make the most of this period. However, it can also be a challenge to beat the competition as well. The good news is that you can stand out from the crowd by dressing your window display. In so doing you will be able to get the most out of this special day. Here are a few ideas for window dressing for Mother’s Day.

Dressing based on your product selection

You plan to sell more items with your display, so determine what your target customers are and what you are selling. Display products from your store and set the right price. Make sure the product will appeal to your target audience. It is not always a good idea to display many products.

Add some humour

People often like visual pranks or clever jokes, so be sure to add a little humour to your window dressing. This is usually used during special events like Christmas Day to lure children and parents. However one can also use this trick during Mother’s Day.

Attention grabbing

The purpose of window dressing is to attract consumer’s attention. Any passer-by will be able to see the types of items you sell at your shop. So it makes sense to showcase what captures their attention. If you can do this effectively, then the chances of making lots of sales are much greater.  Highlight discounts and offers that are available as this will also play a role in attracting the general public to your store.

Colours and Lighting

The display should be vibrant and bright as possible and for this reason the correct use of lighting and also bright colours is key. This can really make a difference to the sales that you will make. No one wants to pass by a shop only to meet with dark lighting and very boring colours. Make sure therefore your window dressing grabs attention with beautiful colour appeal.

Above all make sure your window dressing design is unique and original. Never use ideas you’ve seen  in competitors windows without modifying them. In the end, your window display should be eye-catching, creative, unique and vibrant.

Fashion installation

We dressed a ladies fashion window today for one of our long standing clients of over 12 years.IMG_6911

It’s a difficult window to dress as the building is very old and the window is wide but doesn’t have much height or depth.

We showcased four outfits in total. It’s not possible to use mannequins to display the clothes because of the limited dimensions of the window and so due to the lack of space the use of ‘T bar’ frames to display the outfits were extremely effective in this window.

IMG_6913A floor group was included using the soft dressing technique which works well in the confined area and because of the raised floor in the window any prospective customer can view this group easily.

The boutique style display was completed with the addition of some wire bird cages suspended at varying heights. The muted ‘Tiffany’ coloured cages complemented the blues and jades of the outfits and they completed the simple look of the window.

If your window space is too small to use mannequins to display your fashion pieces then try draping and folding your key pieces on chairs or alternatively over pieces or furniture – small chests of drawers are ideal for this. Soft dressing can be a very effective way of displaying shirts, jackets, knitwear, trousers, skirts and accessories. VM Design can advise you on this and other visual merchandising techniques.

Visual Merchandising Talk at Autumn Fair NEC

In September we held a Visual Merchandising talk and demonstration for 80 people at Birmingham’s NEC.

Although the duration of the demonstration was only 30 minutes we covered the basics of grouping, composition, the creation of the ‘triangle’ within groups, use of props and general do’s and don’ts together with housekeeping. We did a step by step demonstration using wooden crates to give height and a great selection of cream lanterns, candle sticks, candles, vases and small decorative buckets were our merchandise choice for the demonstration.

Initially we showed how to create a display using the symmetrical grouping technique which is the easiest type of grouping for the beginner to master. However as we always point out in our talks although symmetrical grouping is effective it lacks spontaneity and so we encourage the use of the asymmetrical grouping technique which is more difficult to master but is the general form of grouping used in the display industry. The symmetrical group was dismantled and then we showed (using the same crates and merchandise) how to recreate the display using the asymmetrical method.

Our visual merchandising talks are always very laid back and we try to inject some fun into them and we also encourage participation when there is time as this helps to create an informal atmosphere and people seem to take the information on board much easier when they are actually handling the merchandise and creating their own displays.

Several people took photos of the merchandise groups that we created and we have had some interest going forward with regard to future displays.

How Can Your Products Sell Themselves?

Can you imagine what it would be like if your products sold themselves!

Just imagine, the customers walk right into your shop, pick up the products you are selling, pay for it and leave; without you or your sales people having to utter a single word. Even better, would it not be fantastic if they came back again in the future to buy other products.

Well, there may be a way of making your products sell themselves. I can see you scratching your head; thinking “how”? The answer is in the art and science of visual merchandising.

Visual Merchandising

Visual merchandising is the activity of promoting the sale of goods and merchandise, especially by their presentation in retail outlets.

Our professionals who carry out the visual merchandising services are called visual merchandisers and our visual merchandising services aim to present the shop environment and the products in an engaging and enticing display to encourage the sale of the products or the services.

At our VM Design visual merchandising company, we even offer services in creating and staging displays beyond the retail stores as well. We branch out into the areas of:

  • fashion shows
  • conventions
  • public events

“This is all good and well but how will the professionals make your products sell themselves?” The following section will discuss some of the techniques our retail visual merchandising experts call upon.

Encouraging the passers-by to enter the shop

An important element in any shop design is the look of the storefront. Our experts will establish, promote, and enhance your store’s visual image.

Remember! when designed successfully, the shop front provides a glimpse of the products available inside. And, it will entice your potential customers into your shop.

Creating an emotional connection between the shopper and the display

Once the shoppers enter the store, there are several approaches we take in order to inspire and identify with the customer:

  1. Arranging the shop layout so that the shopping experience is as comfortable as possible.
  2. The store layout must be logical, and it must allow for easy browsing.
  3. Selling the product by demonstrating and promoting the product.

Think how many times we have seen a video or a sales person introducing and explaining a new product. And, think of how many times we have bought something new that we did not need in the end.

Enhancing the shopping experience

The key here is entertaining the customers and enhancing their shopping experience. We play around with many variables, including:

  • Music
  • Lighting
  • Climate control

Remember, your products could be selling themselves. But you and your products need our expert visual merchandising help to achieve this.
